Wholesome Undie Sunday!

Tha 'Holesome Undie!

"Gentlemen, STOP your engines!"...

VANCOUVER - July 18th, 2004 (VELO) - Vancouver cyclists and other self propelled fun-seekers are gearing up [by dressing down] for the 5th [that's right 5] year of the Wholesome Undie. The annual Mass Bike Ride [and skate] will take it off -on Sunday, July 18th. In keeping with the event's tradition from past years, participants will gather on the Georgia Street side of the Vancouver Art Gallery, downtown, at noon. The event will be a leisurely Sunday afternoon showoff ride [and roll] culminating in the Slower, Sexier and Smarter race around Vancouver's beautiful False Creek - Slowest one wins! Yes, breath a breath of fresh air and join in for the coolest race of the year. The event is really free. [Unlike the Indy event with $60 tickets for loyal fans but cases of free giveaway tickets for the masses to make sure the stands don't look empty]
...I imagine a Vancouver without a gaping asphalt hole at its centre. Perhaps a little more ASS and less gas? Celebrate diversity.
Last Year's Winner

Meet: This Sunday 18 July, 2004

Time: 12:00 pm, HIGH noon

At: The Vancouver Art Gallery

(Georgia Street Side)

The slow race will take place right on the Molson Indy Asphalt track that resides in the heart of Vancouver, year in, year out. [more than 5 years] The South East False Creek Area is used only by the 3 day corporate event, once per year, and the one day fUnderwear event, a week preceding the Molson Spectacle. Grassroots efforts and hard work towards planning the South East False Creek Sustainable Community are delayed endlessly for the sake of extending the parking lot Molson Indy usage at the heart of our 'World Class City.' Plans now to scuttle the Utopian SEFC project come in the form of the corporate 2010 Olympics, no longer a plan for a car-free area, the sustainaibilty becomes token and the condo development project subsidy becomes transparent. Will corporate scumbags redirect the hopes and dreams of longtime Vancouver Citizens for the sake of short term profits? Not likely. Their plans co$t billions of dollars and ours, well, we don't have anything to hide.
Will it continue under the new COPE city council - after the Molson contract is not renewed?
Yes, the Wholesome Undie will go on, even without a large ugly corporate event to parody. There are still plenty of reasons to protest our societal obcession with speeding cars and tolerance for drunk driving. At least until there are safe bus and bike ways for people to get home on late at night - we will still ride. Plus the ride is fun, getting down to your undies and riding will always be fashionable - even after the Velorution!
Bye bye Molson.... Maybe you should have paid attention to managing your own beer shipment [by not screwing your own workers] and less to promoting an automobile advertising showcase event!
